Coinbase is the world’s largest Bitcoin broker based in San Francisco. It was founded in June 2012 by Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam. Beside Bitcoin brokerage, Coinbase offers a developer API, exchange, and wallet.
As of 2017, the platform is available to users in over 30 countries. Supported payment methods can very depending on the country, but they usually include buying Bitcoin through a bank account, SEPA transfer, Interac Online, etc.
Acquiring Earn.com
In April 2018, Coinbase acquired Earn.com. It’s a portal that uses blockchain and allows people to make money by answering emails or completing other tasks, for more than $100 million. It was Coinbase’s fifth acquisition to date and largest to that moment. It was also the company’s opportunity to fill out the CTO role by bringing Balaji Srinivasan on to the team.
Coinbase brought its valuation to $8 billion through funding
Coinbase had nine funding rounds starting in September 2012. According to its website, through these funding rounds, the platform raised $525.3 million total.
On October 30, 2018, the platform announced on its blog, that it had raised $300 million in series E equity funding from various venture capital investors. Just before that, in August of the same year, Coinbase managed to raise $100 million in a series D funding round.
