Dogecoin: From Meme to Famous Cryptocurrency

July 27, 2019

The whole thing started out as a joke. Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus wanted to create a fun cryptocurrency, and at the same time a parody to countless altcoins flooding the crypto market. Their inspiration was a famous Doge meme.

So, in 2013, Palmer bought the domain dogecoin.com, and set up a website featuring the coin’s logo. On December 6, 2013 Dogecoin was officially launched. And the rest is history.

What happened next?

Soon after the launch, Dogecoin’s value jumped nearly 300%, rising from US$0.00026 to $0.00095. But the value wasn’t the only thing increasing. Dogecoin was becoming more and more popular. Elon Musk, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, Litecoin creator Charlie Lee, and Metal Payments CEO Marshall Hayner were ‘competing’ for the CEO position at Dogecoin. In case you don’t know, Elon Musk won it.

Plus, in 2018, the coin announced its first Dogecoin Hard Fork, which will result in  Dogethereum (DOGX).

The coin became more than just a meme. It became a cryptocurrency that in January 2018, reached a $2 billion market cap.

What you can use Dogecoin for?

Despite its original purpose as a meme, Dogecoin today has other purposes as well. For example, with the coin you can buy Amazon gift cards or even sell a house.

Also, the coin is widely used in the gambling industry, especially for poker. And, from recently, Dogecoin got accepted in the porn industry as well. In fact, Australian porn star Angela White started to accept Dogecoin as a payment method. She announced this on Reddit, stating that she’s in the process of setting up a payment system for the coin. And no, that’s not a joke.

DOGE airdrops

From time to time, you can earn some free DOGE coins through airdrop distribution. For example, Coinone Indonesia conducted an airdrop worth 1,010,000 DOGE coins (~$ 2000) in total. They gave 10 DOGE to the first 1,000 first-come-first-served people with DOGE deposit addresses.

Final words

While Dogecoin started out as a joke, eventually it became a notable and popular cryptocurrency. The user-friendly interface and low fees are making it appealing to crypto users. Moreover, Dogecoin is clear proof that in the wild and wonderful crypto world, nothing is impossible.
